Development Update #10

Wrong Color

Hi friends, it is time for an update!

Tobi is almost through with On Rusty Trails. Over the last week, he was working on the story and a little more on the cutscenes. His main focus was a new project, that has been kicked off, since he needs stuff to do when he is finished with On Rusty Trails. The project is in a really early stage and updates will follow later, but Tobi has no submissions to the blog this week. So let’s move over to Stamm’s desk, he steps into the breach for Tobi and saves us from a gif-less post. Phew!

Our featured image is set in the war zone, where most of this week’s content is from. Elvis is wearing the ShiftySuit™ to stand on the blue platform and the Spike war machine is firing deadly projectiles at him. “This scene is missing something” I hear you mumbling, and right you are. Of course, folks: WE NEED FIRE! We are implementing fire into the war levels, to create a more hostile atmosphere and to give the gameplay a more urgent feel. Look out for fire screenshots in one of the next posts.

We will ramp up the pace with more war gifs at the end, but let us calm down for a second.

Stamm’s first submission is a menu slider, which fits perfectly into the game world (I am contractually bound to say that – @Stamm: you know my banking information). When you are in the menu, you can flick through options and they will pop out with an animation to highlight where you are with the controller. We do, of course, have more options than sound, this is just a little taste.

Can I have some atmosphere in here?! Don’t mind if I do.

A beautiful screenshot from one of our more epic cutscenes. Elvis arrives in Spike city, to sort out some business. The left side has been laid to waste by harsh weather. The lamps are the most stylish thing since THE LAMP in our new Berlin office. Black Pants: Games and fashionable illuminants est. 2012. The walls on the right are the outer defense mechanisms against the Hairy People.

I hear you, I hear you. You came for the moving pictures. You shall receive. Up comes a sequence of gifs from the war levels. First off, an introduction into the war stage.

War Stage 1

War Stage 1

Elvis comes in and has to slip into his ShiftySuit™ to land on the Hairy platform. A closeup look at how platforms vanish and reappear, when you take on the right form.

War Stage 2

War Stage 2

Next up: More action. Elvis in red enters the stage and has to switch to blue to reach the platforms. Little does he know, a Spike war machine has already locked on its target and blasts him out of the sky. Try again! (and again, and again :p)

War Stage 3 - Eureka!

War Stage 3 – Eureka!

OK, you have tried, I can tell. Here is your reward. The full, high velocity, sequence with a perfect playthrough. Or is it? Nah, just teasing. You looked scared there for a second. Of course, Elvis lives! (This is the first time I am saying this in my mind, and I had to smile). The suit-shift in the middle part is a mere showoff, it did not really serve a purpose, except making the Hairy war machine shoot at us. Travel in style is what they say. At the end, Elvis almost plummets to his death, but Eureka! the war machine serves as an elevator. This, naturally, only works with the matching color, otherwise you can rest in pieces.

I have to admit, Stamm has taken over Tobi’s position as OG (original gifter), and now owns bragging rights. Superb stuff!

That’s it for this week. Off to the weekend you go. Have some fun, but don’t forget to bring your ShiftySuit™, you never know when the rain might come.
