DevLog 26 - A Stew for the Masses

cover image Hello, I’m Tobi. Every week I write about the development process of our game Paul. Paul combines turn-based combat, dungeon crawling, and exploration in a hand-designed world. The DevLog is a way for me to reflect on and document the different stages of production, but of course also for everyone interested in seeing how the world of Paul gradually takes shape.

Code Fixes and Gameplay Loop

Last week, I continued refining the core gameplay loop. That mainly involved tweaking different parts of the code here and there, but overall everything feels pretty solid for now.

Narration System

I added a narration system that comments on the events happening based on the player’s actions and also provides a bit of background lore about the world.

Stew Cooked

alt text To avoid sitting in front of a screen all day, I cooked a healthy and tasty potato stew for the other people in our studio and myself. The stew was a great success and got eaten completely, which made me really happy. If you want to make other people happy as well, here’s the recipe…

You’ll need:
1 large onion, tomato paste, soup vegetables, potatoes, red lentils, vegetable stock, salt, pepper, caraway seeds, chili flakes, sunflower oil, water, a pot, and a stove.

Put everything together:

  • Add a bit of oil to the pot and sauté the onions
  • Add about 3 tablespoons of tomato paste and briefly fry it together with the onions.
  • Chop up the remaining vegetables and add them to the pot.
  • Rinse the lentils briefly with water and then add them as well.
  • Pour in water and stir in the vegetable stock.
  • Let everything simmer until the vegetables are soft.
  • Season to taste with salt, pepper, caraway seeds, and chili flakes.

Voilà - It’s cheap, healthy and makes people happy.

So, that’s the current state of things, let’s see what the coming week brings.
Have a great time and stay healthy,
Tobi
